Security Guidance for MoD Staff

He stated that the ministry is “examining” cars from China within its vehicle pools, however stressed that security is a concern in every contemporary vehicles.

We have a fleet of tens of thousands of cars in the MoD and Chinese ones account for a tiny fraction.
However whether you’re driving a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their car, not to have conversations at a secret level in any kind of vehicle, because of the increasing threats of eavesdropping that are present in every single automobile, to restrict those secret conversations in secure locations. This is a prudent and reasonable thing for anyone worried about security.

When it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using all Chinese vehicles, the minister responded: ‘That’s exactly what we are looking into at the moment.”

Broader Security Context

The announcement comes as reports from Norway and Denmark have alerted the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made electric buses, which could allow the Chinese government to disable public transport and bring chaos to public transit.

Additionally, a Russia spy ship was reportedly directing lasers at Royal Air Force pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.

The broader security situation underscores the importance of robust protocols and vigilance in all aspects of government operations, from transport use to communication habits.
