Thomas Tuchel has stated that assembling the most talented footballers does not guarantee creating the best team unit. Tuchel suggested regardless of whether Jude Bellingham were fully fit after his shoulder injury, the player could still have missed out from the recent England squad.
Emphasis on Squad Harmony
The Three Lions' manager also indicated that the Arsenal winger's recall might not have occurred had his fellow Arsenal player Noni Madueke remained fit. The coach has put great importance on squad unity in his selection for the upcoming friendly against Wales and subsequent qualifier against Latvia.
"We're creating the strongest squad," said the England boss, who challenged the conventional wisdom that championship teams always select their top attacking players.
Proven Success
Tuchel pointed to the excellent atmosphere during last month's campaign when England beat Andorra and excelled against the Serbian team in Bellingham's absence. He saw little justification to change the group dynamic which delivered those impressive results.
- Jude Bellingham excluded despite club comeback
- Foden not included despite resurgence
- Jack Grealish also was excluded
Fitness Considerations
While Tuchel partially attributed Bellingham's absence to fitness concerns, he acknowledged that the midfielder desired selection when they spoke. Tuchel had earlier said sorry to the midfielder for comments regarding his playing behavior.
"Don't you think that behavior from substitutes, commitment in sessions, and squad unity enables the starting eleven to play to their potential?" he questioned.
Squad Selection Justification
The coach stressed that his decisions weren't individual targeting specific individuals but rather recognized those who had delivered in the last campaign.
"How would I my explanation dropping them and still be credible in my words?" he posed.
Injury Enforced Changes
The only change to the squad was compulsory with the unfit Noni Madueke being replaced by the recovered Bukayo Saka. Tuchel clarified that even Saka might have missed out had Madueke stayed healthy.
Other absentees featured Chelsea's Cole Palmer, who continues affected by fitness issues. With only two additional gatherings prior to the tournament, time is running out for some players to impress.
World Cup Scheduling Concerns
The manager revealed his preference for national team matches to start later due to heat concerns across the host nations. He acknowledged this would create viewing difficulties for English fans but maintained player welfare must come first.
"I understand the fans won't be happy but for the team it's preferable with later kickoffs," he stated. "Our athletes are the game and we must to protect them."
