The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.
Australia's selection chief the selector has declared that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.
Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.
Earlier indications from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.
The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the likelihood of being involved.
"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations at play, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.
"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a significant role. With luck starting in Perth. If not, we'll reassess."
Previous Setbacks
He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.
He has a history of recurring issues, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.
Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the Ashes.
The selector indicated that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.
Alternative Arrangements
If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.
The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a safety move because of soreness in his side.
He labeled it as a "slight concern and confirmed that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."
"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the first Test as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.
"He was only going to play the first two ODIs in any case. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
