American Strike Claims Lives of Four during Suspected Narcotics Vessel Incident near Venezuela's Coast
According to US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, a US strike eliminated four people in an operation against a vessel suspected of transporting narcotics in international waters near Venezuela.
The strike occurred shortly after US officials notified lawmakers regarding the US had entered a "non-international armed conflict" against narco-trafficking organizations.
This marks at least the fourth unprecedented and controversial operation by US forces outside US territorial waters in recent weeks.
Specifics of the Strike
The defense secretary stated that the vessel was targeted while carrying large quantities of narcotics bound for the United States, posing a threat as poisoning the people.
“Intelligence assessments definitively verified the vessel’s involvement in drug trafficking, identifying those aboard as narco-terrorists using established smuggling routes,” he declared in a social media post.
Hegseth further asserted that the vessel had links to terrorist groups, a classification introduced in a confidential memo sent to lawmakers.
Juridical and Governmental Context
The Trump administration has informed Congress regarding its view that cartels are non-state armed actors and their actions smuggling drugs represent an armed assault against the United States.
The memo was accompanied by a classified briefing with lawmakers of the Senate armed services committee, held earlier this week.
White House representatives have sought to legitimize these operations by citing Trump’s constitutional authority, permitting military action in self-defense during confined conflicts.
Previous Strikes and International Response
Prior to this strike, American military had conducted strikes against three vessels in Caribbean waters, resulting in 17 fatalities and sparking widespread international outrage.
The defense secretary reiterated that these strikes “will continue” as long as “the attacks on the American people are over”.
